The Scythians...

View this post on Instagram

The Scythians were a white tribe from Southern Russia "Warlike people are often called bloodthirsty. but rarely is the term so literally accurate as when applied to the Scythians, who customarily drank the blood of the first man they slew in battle. In addition, the Scythians took scalps from their victims, softening these trophies by rubbing them between their hands and using them as napkins. "The Scyth is proud of these scalps and hangs when from his bridle-rein." Herodotos wrote. "The greater the number of such napkins that a man can show, the more highly is he esteemed among them." Some Scyhtian warriors would sew scalps together to make cloaks. Others would fashion quivers from the skin of their enemies' right arms. For their most hated foes, they reserved a special humiliation. They would turn their enemies' skulls into drinking cups. More prosperous Scyths would line the interior of such skull cups with gold. Herodotos observed, "they treat the skulls of their kinsmen in the same way, in cases where quarrels have occurred. .....When important visitors arrive, the skulls are passed round and the host tells the story of them: how they were once his relatives and made war against him, and how he defeated them-all of which passes for a proof of courage." #Scythians #AegeanEvent #ScienceOfSelf
