Ancient Blackness and the Construction of Whiteness

Whiteness is both a defined set of characteristics, phenotypically and genotypically. It is also a construct. The construct itself is the foundation of white fragility that masks itself in society as white supremacy. Historically there were problematic "white" ethnic groups that had to "buy into" whiteness due to several different factors. The root of these factors was their implied or actually proximity to Blackness. My colleague, @ultraazuli , is doing groundbreaking work in terms of the history of Italy, especially Southern Italy and how this has played out historically in Italy, the Americas and worldwide in terms of Italians. Another ethnic group that had to "buy into" whiteness has been the Irish. When they were first brought to the Americas they weren't considered "white" and had to prove that they were "more white" than white folks. This is why in many places, racism in terms of it being inflicted on Blacks by Irish, is next level (if you are Black and have traveled to certain points around Boston you know exactly what I mean). This is why they were drafted to be cops being utilized as a buffer between non-white peoples and the "proper" white people (this tactic was later utilized when the white core wanted to adopt Italians in the Americas into their paradigm).
