Apocalypse Then, Apocalypse Now

View this post on Instagram

Eschatology is the the part of theology concerned with death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind. In previous Aegean Event posts I have pointed out that there is a major difference between how cultures of the Global Majority (People of Color) and how white culture view time. In cultures of the Global Majority time is seen as cyclical while in white culture it is seen as linear. This carries over into overall philosophies and theology. Most philosophies and religion of the Global Majority are cyclical. There is no type of teachings that point to an end point that one is supposed to be moving towards. If there is it is only one in a series of repeatable events that will come around again like seasons. Yet in white religions or religions that are the result of the interaction of the Global Majority and the early white tribes things are written as those there is some movement toward an apocalyptic moment where there will be confrontation between "darkness" and "light." Though these have been "abstracted" in modern times when all of the "fancy talk" is stripped away certain things are clear. Even though they are framed as future projections they often also refer to historical clashes that took place between the Global Majority and white tribes. Also even though they have been abstracted into spirituality the locations of these future clashes are always located in specific physical locations on the planet. With the People of the Book (Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam) again these are locations where there were historical clashes between the Global Majority and white tribes in antiquity. So it is no surprise that we get locations for the Apocalypse (Frashokereti, Year 6,000, Yawm al-Qiyāmah, etc) are in the Levant, the Middle East, Iran, etc. Even in white religions that don't deal with the people of the Book, like Norse mythology, you have notions of an end time like Ragnarok.
